EP7 canon info
Personality:
Because Lion’s true gender is ambiguous and not stated in-canon, I will be playing him as a male.
First and foremost, Lion’s family history will be examined. Lion Ushiromiya is the nineteen year old heir-apparent to the prosperous Ushiromiya family who resides on the island of Rokkenjima. It was mentioned by Lion that he will take over the family when he reaches the age of twenty. He is the grandchild of the current head, Kinzo Ushiromiya, and the child of Krauss and Natsuhi. Lion only has one sibling--a younger sister named Jessica. Lion is very respectful to his entire family, and they all seem to share a peaceful, stable life together, however not much is shown in-depth as Lion (or this version of Lion, at least) is a somewhat special existence in the series.
Lion’s history is twisted and somewhat tragic. At one point in time, Lion’s grandfather had a mistress named Beatrice Castiglioni, an important woman who loaned gold to the family so that they could prosper and gain wealth. Kinzo had a child with this Beatrice, whom he also named Beatrice. Lion is the illegitimate child born between Kinzo and his daughter Beatrice II. This is why Lion is the favored heir, whereas Kinzo’s other, older son Krauss would normally inherit the title of family head. It should be noted that Lion knows nothing about his true background until Bernkastel reveals these facts later on in the game (past my chosen canon point), and believes that he is the true child of Natsuhi and Krauss until then.
Probably the most important factor to discuss about Lion is the fact that this person’s gender is not known for certain in-canon. This mystery is due to the fact that the “fragment,”(or world) in which Lion exists, which seems to be an ordinary Rokkenjima of 1986 except for his explicit existence, has only an extremely rare one-in-a-million (or more accurately, 1 in 2,578,917 according to Bernkastel) chance of occurring. Furthermore, Lion’s gender is never revealed throughout the story or even remotely hinted at. Lion seems to habitually withhold this information from others when they ask by responding with something enigmatic like: “Which do I look like more to you?” Something like this occurred when Willard H. Wright attempted to ask Lion what his true gender was. Because it can go either way, I will be portraying him as a male.
As far as overall personality goes, Lion is a pretty honest and amiable person despite the burden of being the heir in line to inherit the family headship. Also, in terms of the eccentric cast of Umineko, Lion is probably the most average--meaning that he is not a witch, sorcerer, territory master, or exclusively a Metaworld being. This normal, happy character is polite and demands for people to be respectful--though not in an imposing manner. Instead, when he catches someone acting out, that person will find themselves on the receiving end of one of this kid’s formidable pinches. And unfortunately for the victims, the favored target for Lion’s pinch is the derriere. We see this action performed several times when Willard H. Wright’s blunt attitude becomes a bit too rude for Lion‘s tastes. Lion has also teasingly done this to his younger sister Jessica, since her behavior can tend to be rough and rowdy. The pinching isn’t in any way meant to be flirtatious, as most would think--however, it does distinctly reveal a somewhat playful and mischievous side of Lion.
It’s true that Lion is, for the most part, a generally polite, easygoing person. However, once he runs out of patience, this mild behavior becomes grumpy and somewhat snide--at this point, Lion won’t put up with any nonsense. This is shown during the funeral Kinzo holds for Beatrice when Bernkastel is carelessly standing on the deceased’s coffin, showing no respect for the dead. Lion asks her to step down. But of course the words do no good on someone like Bernkastel, and Lion eventually has to use a harsher tone--which Bernkastel still ignores. Other than that, this no-nonsense, somewhat sarcastic attitude is often displayed around Will, especially when Will won’t explain something to Lion and Lion is forced to remain in a confused state.
In terms of intelligence, Lion isn’t particularly a genius, nor is he dense. He is quick to catch on to certain things at times (such as figuring out that Diana was Will’s cat), but slow with some other concepts--especially when it involves the Metaworld (though this could be explained by the fact that, to someone like Lion, talk about witches and magic would seem quite bizarre and wouldn’t make much sense anyways). When Willard and Bernkastel discuss topics related to these things, Lion tries to understand but doesn’t quite grasp it, and is often told by Will that he’ll “just get a headache” if he keeps thinking on things that are beyond his level. It can be seen that not being able to understand something irritates Lion. However, since he is so honest, Lion isn’t afraid to admit when he can’t quite fully understand something, as seen during the times Will and Bernkastel discuss the game board.
It’s mentioned in EP7 that Lion held the position of student council president while he was in high school, and is often referred to as a “model student.” Along with his family upbringing and current status as heir-apparent, this shows that Lion is a prime representative and a natural-born leader.
It is shown several times that Lion is a very eloquent speaker who is able to handle most situations discreetly. This could be because Lion is accustomed to dealing with people with difficult, temperamental attitudes, since he often speaks with his grandfather, who is an eccentric, difficult type of person.
One thing that could be considered a strength of Lion is that he can be bold at times. This is shown several times during EP7, such as when Lion runs out of patience from being hassled by the unwelcome visitors that arrived during Beatrice’s funeral. He is also relatively intelligent, as he is able to figure out that the person/thing named Diana that Will mentions is a cat and not a person--namely because Will mentioned that Diana would tear up the couch if he’s away for too long, and naturally Lion assumes this behavior belongs to an animal instead of a person. And of course, the best strength Lion has going for him is his amazing pinching skills.
As for drawbacks, however, Lion is an honest person, though he can also be naïve and innocent to the point where it harms him. Also, mentally, emotionally and physically, this person is not very strong and can’t handle being overwhelmed. In the end of EP7, when Lion’s true circumstances are revealed to him by Bernkastel, as well as when he is shown a possible death scenario in which he is killed, Lion is on the verge of just giving up before Will comes to the rescue. So in that sense, Lion could be viewed as a weak character. This is past the chosen canon point I want to play him from, but I feel this reaction would apply to any dire situation.
Game Specific:
Arcana: Sun
Justification:
Positive:
a bright future—Lion has come far, being raised as the heir to his family, and seems to be set in life with a successful future.
true achievement—Lion has presumably worked hard to be worthy of this position, and was not handed everything like a spoiled child.
good health—Lion is not ill and seems relatively healthy like a normal person.
approval—Lion is the understanding type, and would treat what he likes with approval.
joy—There is much of this in his life. He gets on well with his family and his life is fine.
vitality—Not so much in regards to strength, but the path to becoming the next head of the family is not easy and is quite the burden to shoulder. He seems to be doing well with it.
Negative:
Failure—Failure to understand certain things. Lion doesn't always perfectly grasp certain concepts, but isn't afraid to admit it.
illness—No illness to speak of, here.
arrogance—Of course arrogance comes naturally with being a rich heir. Only he doesn't often display this because he's tactful. He can tend to be snide at times.
hyperactivity—None.
vanity—Pretty much the same as what's mentioned above for arrogance. Perhaps his ambiguous appearance can also lend to this—he seems to take pride in seeming androgynous, as he doesn't disclose his true gender.
Samples:
First Person Sample:
What…exactly is this? I’m afraid I don’t quite understand it…I don’t recognize where I am, at all. This definitely isn’t an uncharted area of Rokkenjima, though Grandfather was rumored to have a secret mansions built somewhere, and I know there are several places there that I‘m unaware of… But, no…
I’m certain this is a completely different place altogether, it's far too huge. The climate is so much different, and…this place is actually quite a bit more remarkable than my island.
Besides, I doubt an entire city could fit on my home island. The thought alone is bizarre.
[He puts a hand over his mouth in thought, looking pensive and a bit troubled.]
More importantly, I believe leaving the church should have been impossible. It was...well, I can't quite explain why. Not even I understand it... In any case, I must return there as soon as possible. To my family.
Third Person Sample:
A youth wearing a noble red suit could be seen walking among the streets of Prospero. He didn't appear to be idly wandering—he looked rather lost, in all actuality. He walked in a manner that was both hesitant and slightly guarded, while he observed the area cautiously.
“This is most definitely not Rokkenjima. I—I don't think this is in Japan at all. No, it's far too Western. But, where...?”
More importantly than where, was how. He wasn't sure how he'd ended up here, when he was attending a funeral only moments before. Well, not so much a funeral, any more. He had been interrogating his family members with a man in a blue coat. That thought suddenly gave him an idea.
Lion stopped and pressed his hand against the brick wall of a nearby building as he craned his neck around to fully examine his surroundings, eyes searching for any signs of a familiar face. “Will? Will should be here.” Yes, it was only appropriate to wonder where the person you were last with had ended up. If Lion was here, Will should not be far. He sighed quietly before shaking off his previous uncertainty and steeling himself to a decision. “I suppose I should find him, first of all.”
